Situated in the heart of Colorado’s Middle Park is one of the country’s premier guest ranches. Since 1919 The C Lazy U luxury guest ranch has been celebrated around the world for its rich history, rustic elegance, legendary cuisine and signature 5-SPUR SERVICE. A recent partnership has led to the High Adventure Company handling the hunting on this amazing property. Home to some of the world’s largest mule deer bucks and one of the largest elk herds in the Rockies, this premier ranch sits in a valley surrounded on the north, east, and south by mountains that form the continental divide. This geography forms a slight pocket westward in the drainage basin of the Pacific Ocean making this ranch ideal habitat for monster mule deer bucks and trophy rocky mountain elk.
The hunting on the C Lazy U is considered by many to be as good as it gets in the western US. The early season elk hunting during the archery season is usually spent chasing bugling bulls around the mountains or by sitting in strategically placed stands on wallows or watering holes. As the season progress and the rut starts to wane, hunters will spend more time glassing the high mountain meadows and travel corridors where the elk move from the high country into their winter ranges. Hunters can expect to see large numbers of elk during their hunt and we expect trophies to average close to 300 BC gross. While we have seen elk on the property approaching 400 if you looking for a bull of that caliber this is probably NOT the hunt for you.
The mule deer hunting on our property is possibly the best trophy mule deer hunting in the country. Hunters will spend their time glassing for trophy bucks and will earn their trophy with their glasses and not their boots in most cases. We only take between 3 to 5 bucks annually off of this property and hunters can expect trophies from 180″ up.
The Habitat in the Middle Park ranges from high mountainous slopes with lodge pole pine to sage brush valleys to hay meadows in the lower elevations. Elevation ranges on our property are from 8,500 to over 12,000 where the road crosses the continental divide. An epic pine beetle problem is being encountered in the lodge pole pine forests of the middle park region, the elk and mule deer are receiving ancillary benefits of the additional sunlight hitting the forest floor which is increasing the food base of both the deer and the elk.
Archery season opening in CO in late August and continues through Sept. Rifle season opens for both deer and elk in Oct and continues into November.
Hunters can expect to harvest elk in the 300 class. Mule deer hunters can expect to start in the mid 170’s to 180” and go up from there. We offer quality elk in large numbers and some of the largest mule deer bucks in the country.
This property is legendary when it comes to service and accommodations. Very few hunting operations in the world can offer this level of accommodations in such a wonderful setting. Hunters will either stay in one of the cabins on the property or the large luxury home we use as a base camp during the season.
Hunters arrive into Denver International airport where they can rent a car for the 2 hour drive to the ranch. A transfer can be arranged thru a local company for an additional fee.
Hunters can expect warm conditions during the early archery season. During the rifle hunts we can have mild to server conditions and often we can experience significant snowfall during this time of the year. Sept average temps are high’s in the mid 60’s and low’s in the mid 30’s. October average temps are high in the mid 50’s and lows in the mid 20’s. November average temps are highs in the mid 30’s and lows in the teens.
