One of America’s Most Exclusive Fisheries. The world renowned Salmon River stretches only 17 miles from Lighthouse Reservoir to where it empties into Lake Ontario. The Barclay family owns the 2.5 miles at the mouth of the Salmon River, this is the only truly private stretch of water on the entire river system. Within the DSR we guests will have access to private beats only available to anglers staying at the Manor House.

The History
The Barclay family opened Douglaston Salmon Run in 1987 as a private fishery. The property has been in the family since 1807, when it was settled by Colonel Rufus Price, an Aide-de-Camp to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
The late Senator/Ambassador Douglas Barclay is a direct, seventh generation descendant of Colonel Price. Along with other family members, Doug designed Douglaston Salmon Run to be a world-class fishery where guests can enjoy the ultimate fishing experience in the company of like-minded sportsmen.
Since its opening, the DSR, and more specifically the private water associated with the Manor House, has become one of the most exclusive fisheries in the world.
The Fishery
The Salmon River has continued to grow as a tourism destination since the 1980s. In 2016, anglers from every state in America and 30 nations around the world bought state licenses to fish on the river. (Syracuse.com 2018)
The Salmon River offers some of the finest sport-fishing in the country and is where two major fish records have been set—the Great Lakes record Chinook salmon (47 lbs. 13 oz.) and the world record Coho salmon (33 lbs. 4 oz.) In addition to Chinook and Coho Salmon, lucky anglers can also encounter Atlantic Salmon, Steelhead and trophy Brown Trout.
Around Labor Day the Chinook (King) and Coho salmon begin the migration from the mouth of Lake Ontario into the Salmon River. The peak of the spawning run usually doesn’t occur until the latter half of September and the first half of October.
Steelhead begin entering the Salmon River in late October and continue through Spring. They feed aggressively on the abundant salmon eggs in the Fall, thus making it a very good time to go steelhead fishing.
Atlantic salmon are native to Lake Ontario. They are fall spawners and start their spawning run as early as July. Atlantic salmon can range from 5 to 20 lbs.
Brown trout enter the river from mid-September to mid-November during their spawning run and will feed heavily on salmon eggs. Brown trout range up to 20 lbs. in the Salmon River.
